I am a Health Coach, Skier, Surfer , CrossFit Trainer and Physician.
I spent almost 30 years doing long hard exercise sessions that made me fit and I thought, healthy. I have run mountains, been a ski coach at full certification level and coached high intensity interval classes .
My perfect day is a blue sky, fresh powder snow , a backcountry peak , and getting in some great turns , mountain vistas and fresh air.
But then I developed Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (PAF) , an arrhythmia in part related to my chronic cardio and other inflammatory lifestyle habits.
I was frustrated and angry personally that my journey had led me to an illness. The illness meant I had to stop my usual exercise: even walking up hills was off limits for a while. It affected my whole life and feeling of wellbeing. My identity seemed to be lost.
I looked widely for a solution and answers as to how I'd arrived at this point and where things went wrong.
At work as a physician, I was seeing the increasing results of poor dietary and lifestyle choices as an epidemic. Yet I was exercising regularly , was very fit and thought I ate healthily.
I follow my cardiologist’s advice and medical management AND IN ADDITION….
I adopted a lifestyle that as best as we can guess was shared by our primal ancestors and aligned with our genetic makeup. I reset my exercise regime and dietary choices and specifically reduced cardiotoxic inflammatory practices.
By committing to this lifestyle practice, and adding some nuances I have found what works for me. I have been able to surf, ski, climb, participate at CrossFit and stay appropriately active again.
I am still on the journey , focussing on wellness and achieving a level of fitness that I am happy with.
This journey involved a lot of exploration, time and failures. I realised that there has to be so many people out there like me. Who have had a set back in being able to do what they enjoy the most- that freedom and exploration of our natural environment in their own way. It would have been so much easier with a community, with inspirational stories, with the opportunity to reach out to a coach to help me on my journey.
So Primal Regeneration came to be.
